Hi Jonathan. You could provide the students with 2 or 3 case studies (fictitious clients) of fitness clients and have the student select one client, design a 3-4 question questionnaire on their fitness (assessment) and then design a 1 workout program for the client (explaining what the various exercises are intended to address).

Great question! Here are a couple of ideas for your students:

-Create their own obstacle course race (from course design to logistics to execution).


-Design a fitness training program that will help their client(s) to get prepared for an obstacle course race (you or your students can choose the distance and obstacles)

They could also evaluate where, why, when and with who to use different strength training modalities. For example: all body weight exercises, stability exercises, mobility training, explosiveness training, agility training, etc.

You could also have them do the same with evaluating workout sets: pyramids, circuits, traditional 3 set, super sets, same body part rotational circuits, etc.

Lastly, you could have them write about the history of strength training, how it began, how it has evolved, different forms, different types of equipment, etc. Or even a further background on the pioneers in strength training.

Have fun with it! There are tons of topics!

Hello Jonathan Glick,

How about having them design a fitness program for themselves with explanations of the benefits of the program and drawbacks of not doing the exercises?
I hope this way the students will have something to keep up a healthy lifestyle.
Make sure they design a log to keep track, too.

You could get them to learn a technical lift like a power clean, deadlift, etc and have them hand in a video of themselves performing those lifts. Bring in a professional to show them how to do it with a proper breakdown of the moves. Get them to hand it in with a critique of their form and any other exercises, stretches, or mobility techniques to improve their lift over time.

You could assign each student (or group of students) a muscle group or method of exercising (plyometrics, agility, mobility, etc), or piece of equipment (BOSU, TRX, bodyweight, a stick) and get them to hand in a sheet with photos and descriptions. Each person (or group) teaches the exercises on the sheet during class and then provides enough copies for each person in the class. all the students leave with an arsenal of exercises and modalities to resource from in the future.
